Friday Family Fotos!

Picture in September 1949 of newborn sister Georgia Rae at 2 weeks, our Dad and me at 2 years.  My birthday is on the 7th of  September, and Georgia's is on the 6th of the month, two years apart.  The note by the picture said it was baby's first picture with Daddy.

Next picture I am 2 years & 8 months, and Georgia is 8 months old.  Love the stroller.  Antique now if we still had it!

I can't tell what I was busy fixing.  Maybe fixing the duck's tail?!?  I bet I wasn't able to push that stroller in the grass.  Just not big enough yet.  Love the fender covers on the stroller wheels.  I don't remember what color the stroller was.  Do you Georgia?   But I do remember later when I was bigger that I used the stroller for my dolls and teddy bear.

Friday Family Fotos!

My fathers family came from Estonia in 1912 when  my father was 3 years old.  I don't know what kind of work my grandfather did when he lived in Estonia, but here he learned the dry cleaning business in New York before moving to Minnesota.  He opened up a dry cleaning business in Park Rapids MN, named Vaegemast Cleaners. Dad and uncle John both learned the business, with my dad staying here and my uncle later moving to Greeley Colorado to opened his own dry cleaning business.  Both dad and uncle John served in WWII, so there was a time when both were gone.

This would be my grand father in his early years of business.  Notice the big steam press in back.  On the table up front, notice the large flat iron.  You can't see the sewing machine, but it was directly across from the cutting table to the left edge of the picture.  Both grandparents had passed away before my sister and I were born, so we never knew them.

My father sitting on the desk, other fellow is unknown.  The  photo below is after some remodeling of this same area.  Notice that there is now linoleum on the floor, and better lighting.  Uncle John behind the desk and my dad to the edge.  As a small child I remember the front part of the cleaners like this picture below.  Up front on the left side that can't be seen was a huge ceiling to floor mirror.  Wish I had a picture of that, as it was said to have been the mirror out of the first saloon in our town.  It later was moved to our house and took up a good space of one wall.  You can see better detail of the pictures if you click on them to enlarge them.  The ceiling was the tin or metal that was used back then.

My grandfather and father were tailors, and did fitting of suit clothes for men.  I have the their treadle sewing machine that they did tayloring with.  It is on the original table, with cigarette burns in the wood, and all.  They were smokers, and I remember my dad would leave a cigarette on the edge so the ashes would fall off.  I think more burned there than he actually smoked.  Old Lucky Strikes!  Yuk!    The sewing machine needs to have a new leather belt installed on it to get it working again.  This is the machine that I learned to sew on.   Mom and I did some reupholstry work years ago, when she was still alive, so I think I haven't used this machine since the mid 70's.   I remember that I loved using the knee lever to raise and lower the presser foot.  This sits waiting for someone to use it - one of these days I should get it going again.

This was the store front shortly before demolition of the building.  The main street of our town has really changed since I was young.  There is only one business that I know of that has the same owners.  That would be the little gift shop that was next to the dry cleaners.  Bishops clothing store is no longer there - that building now houses realators.  The cleaners building was not in good shape, so after that was sold in the late 60's or very early 70's, it was torn down and rebuilt.  It now houses a womans clothing store - the expensive kind, that I don't go in!

Friday Family Fotos!

Here is my good lookin husband when he was young and hot!  He must have been about a Jr. in high school here. so about 1961.  He said this was at the MN Jr. Livestock show at South St.Paul.   Love that flat top!

This next picture is in 1960 - (it was marked on the back).  Taken at MN Winter Show at Crookston.  His best friend Wayne  in the middle now lives at North Pole, Alaska.  We don't get to see him often, but when we do - it's a lot of laughs!  He was the one always getting into fights, and my nice guy husband, was the peace maker!    Some day we want to visit him and family in Alaska.
This was taken in the spring 1948, in Nebraska.  Their farm was near Ceresco, NE.  Hubby is the 3rd child, and he was 4 years old at that time.  His younger sister Kathy (age 2) didn't hold a pig, and still doesn't like them.  His older brother lives in Wisc. and older sister Jane lives in Minnesota, but winters a few months in Arizona (lucky girl).

Looks like my husbands love for livestock started very young - and continues!  I'm going to Louisiana next week to spend a week at our daughters so I can babysit for Renee, and Steve can't come with because farrowing season started on Feb 1.  So he has to stay home and baby sit with his baby piggies coming now.

Cooper Chapters - My dad "Ike"

This is one rare time when my dad visited North Dakota with us. Part of the picture didn't scan in because it was so white at the top, with the man standing closest to my dad, and it showed him pitching a soft ball. But with the poor quality, my scanner just didn't pick that part of the picture up. The fellow out in the back field with his hands on his knees, is my cousin "Bunty". Uncle Herb is pitching, and I can't identify the other person. I don't know the year this was taken, but must have been in the late 40's or early 50's, as my dad looks so young. But then again, it could be earlier, before I was born. I was born in 1947, and he and my mother were married after he got back from WWII. I don't know why he wasn't playing - he had been a really good athlete in high school.

What do you think of his hair cut? A white shirt and dress pants and shoes. Pretty dapper! I think he wore a white shirt a lot. And the little "box camera" sitting there on the ground. I think this was the case for the camera, and I remember using the camera as a child learning to take pictures. This case was brown, kind of a card board with a cloth covering. The camera itself was like a box too, but right now I can't remember exactly how it worked. I know I've seen some like it in antique stores; maybe I should buy the next one I see. Boy, hasn't photography come a long way????

In checking the picture out closer, I don't see where they had any bases made up, or maybe they were just pitching the ball and practice hitting. I remember in later years when us little kids were big enough to play, that we all played and ran bases. I think that would be the only place I've ever played ball. I am just no good at softball. My eyes can't follow the ball; let alone my hitting it with a bat!

Thanks Connie (Far Side of Fifty) for suggestion of putting a darker paper behind picture before scanning. It worked great. Now when I scan and print to give pictures to the kids, I'll know what to do.
